An upgrade to delight users of older PCs

Steve Jones (center), of Gran-IT Consulting, told the May GLITS meeting that a solid state drive can make a PC run ten times faster. He's been surprised at how happy it makes the users.

Steve has been putting SSDs (solid state drives) into client PCs but not into servers, so far. An SSD can be a drop-in replacement for an older HDD (hard disk drive). However, there are new technologies and terms to learn—such as TRIM.

The audience discussed how an SSD not only speeds up data access but also extends a portable computer's battery life, and how the prices for SSDs have been falling. Concerns about wear from repeated writes remain but are being addressed.

Steve's slides are available in their original PowerPoint format, as well as in PDF and text formats.
